2012 Preview: Mazama Football

Mazama Vikings
(2011 Record: 3-5; 2-3 Skyline Conference – Did not make playoffs)

After an outright league title in 2010, the Mazama Vikings are trying to reclaim their success after a sub-.500 season last year. A flurry of younger players combined with missing players due to injury and eligibility hindered Mazama’s ability to reach a championship level.

For the Mazama players, they say beating the in-city teams is critical for their success measurement this year. The team’s first conference test will be out of Klamath Falls, however, playing at conference-favorite North Valley on Sept. 28. Two quarterbacks are competing for the starting spot. Whoever wins will have outstanding athlete Levi Huffenberger in the backfield after not playing in 2011.

Head Coach: John Mathis (31 years overall at Mazama)

Returning starters: Offense: 6, Defense: 6
- Key losses: Gary Rose, Jake Cox
- Notable Returners: Ron Rose (OT, 2nd Team All-Conf.), Trevor Derra, Tommy Stevens, Marcus Idrogo (RB, 2nd Team All-Conf.)
