GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A rare mountain fox has been caught on camera in Oregon. The fox isn’t well known in Oregon, but is in California. Scientists will look for DNA samples to confirm it is the Sierra Nevada red fox – one of the rarest mammals in North America.
The last hard evidence for the animal in Oregon was a DNA test of a skin dating to 1939. But this could be the latest false alarm, as trail cameras near Crater Lake have captured photos like this before that ended up not to be of Sierra Nevada red foxes.
