BEND, Ore. — A Central Oregon man has the plague, and he’s in a hospital here in critical condition. Health officials say the man contracted the extremely rare disease after being bitten by a stray cat. Doctors say the disease is treatable if caught early. Two people have died from the plague in Oregon, and both of those were over twenty years ago: 1983 in Klamath County and 1987 in Douglas County.
