Beavers-Utes rubber match Sunday

SALT LAKE CITY – Jo Jo Sharrar singled home two in the bottom of the 11th to give Utah a 4-3 win over the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team Saturday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Sharrar’s single narrowly evaded John Tommasini at second, allowing two runs to score in the come-from-behind win. The Utes had the bases loaded after two singles and an intentional walk.

The loss went to Oregon State reliever Tony Bryant, who dropped to 5-2 after allowing the game’s final two runs. He worked one inning in the loss.

The Beavers had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 11th. Max Gordon, who finished the game with two RBI, hit the first pitch he saw from Utah reliever Tyler Wagner in the 11th into center, allowing Dettman to come in from second. Dettman was pinch running for Danny Hayes, who had singled to open the inning. John Tommasini put Dettman into scoring position with his 16th sacrifice bunt of the season.

Jace Fry started for the Beavers (31-17 overall, 12-11 Pac-12 Conference) and went nine innings, scattering four hits and two runs. He struck out six, walked three and threw 115 pitches but did not figure in the decision.

Joe Pond, Fry’s counterpart, threw 95 pitches in six innings, allowing five hits and two runs before being relieved by Kesley Kondo in the seventh. Pond struck out three and walked two and did not figure in the decision.

Nick Green, the final of four pitchers for Utah (13-34, 7-19), picked up the win after getting the final out of the 11th. He improved to 5-2 this season.

Oregon State took a 1-0 lead in the second when Hayes hit a sac fly to center but saw Utah tie the game in the fifth when Cory Hunt singled to center.

The Beavers took a 2-1 lead in the seventh on yet another sac fly, this one to left by Gordon with the bases loaded. But the Utes answered in the eighth when Parker Morin hit a two-out double to the gap in right, scoring Tyler Relf from first.

Morin had two of the Utes’ seven hits on the day while Keyes, Hayes and Gordon all had two hits to pace the Beavers.

Oregon State and Utah conclude their three-game series Sunday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
