Deputy to be honored 130 years later

SALEM, Ore. — Oregon law enforcement will honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty next week in Salem. The ceremony May 8 will honor Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Samuel J. Lewis. It was only recenly discovered that in March 1882, Deputy Lewis was guarding a prisoner in the Klamath Falls area when a group of masked men attempted to take the prisoner with the intention of lynching him. Deputy Lewis refused to surrender him, and deputy Lewis was shot in an ensuing gunfight. The bullet hit a main artery in the thigh and he died shortly after the shooting.
