KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Southern Oregon shutout No. 5 Oregon Tech behind great pitching from Jordyn Kurtz and five RBI from Katie Moy to send Oregon Tech to its third straight Cascade Conference loss 8-0 in the opening game of a scheduled doubleheader.
Game two was suspended due to rain in the top of the 2nd inning with SOU leading 3-0; no makeup date was scheduled. Southern Oregon improves to 17-16 overall and 7-10 in conference play. Oregon Tech slips to 30-7 and 13-4 in the CCC.
After a quiet 1st inning by both teams in game one, Southern Oregon erupted for five runs in the top of the 2nd inning taking advantage of three walks and three hits, highlighted by a Katie Moy single that scored two.
Moy added to the lead in the 6th crushing a three-run homerun to right-center field to put the game away for SOU 8-0.
Jordyn Kurtz was stellar, giving up just seven hits over the six-inning mercy rule-shortened game while striking out five Owls, walking only one to improve to 8-7 on the year.
Taylor Schmidt had one of her shortest outings of the year pitching just two innings, giving up five runs on four hits and walking three as she picked up the loss, falling to 17-4 on the season.
Melissa Logan led Oregon Tech offensively going 2-for-2 with a double.
Oregon Tech will head to La Grande to play Eastern Oregon (10-17, 6-13 CCC) on Friday, April 20 at 2:00 p.m. Southern Oregon will travel to Caldwell, Idaho to play the College of Idaho (28-12, 11-9 CCC) at the same time. Tech will then play C of I on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m. with Southern Oregon playing at Eastern on Saturday.
