YREKA, Cal. – The California Department of Fish and Game is being sued over new regulations that put a stop to suction dredges, or powerful vaccuums that suck up rocks and sand from river beds to filter out gold. The ban is part of an effort to protect salmon, but gold miners want the practice allowed. The New 49ers mining club is part of a group bringing the suit and filed in Siskiyou County Superior Court.
