IRS issues warning about tax refund scam

WASHINGTON, D.C. – More now on the tax return scam we told you about this week. The official warning from the IRS came yesterday. The scheme promises refunds to people who have little or no income and normally don’t have to file taxes. Those behind the scheme claim they can obtain a tax refund or nonexistent stimulus payment based on the American Opportunity Tax Credit, even if the victim was not enrolled in or paying for college. The IRS is going after those who perpetuate the scheme, but ultimately all taxpayers are responsible for the accuracy of their returns.
