HS Final: NSCIF and OSAA tournys begin

Tulelake, Calif. — The NSCIF/Les Schwab Championships started Tuesday for California high schools. The Tulelake Honkers girls opened Division V first round play hosting Weed, which built a 14 point fourth quarter lead. The Honkers fought back, cutting the deficit to 48-39, but wouldn’t get any closer. Weed wins 50-42 and now plays at Portola Thursday.

In the Division VI playoffs, the Butte Valley boys fell behind early too, as Maxwell led by 15 points at halftime. The Bulldogs came up just short, losing 64-63. Maxwell now plays in the quarterfinals Thursday at Paradise Adventist.

The school’s other teams get started tonight, with Tulelake’s boys hosting Los Molinos. The Honkers are the Division V bracket’s five seed. The Butte Valley girls host Herlong for the right to play at Redding Christian in the quarterfinals.

Both games start at 7:00 PM.

OSAA State Championships

Triad’s bid at making it to the OSAA 1A Girls Basketball State Championships came to an end Tuesday, as the Timberwolves lost at Prairie City 50-40. Entering the state playoffs at the Mountain Valley League’s No. 3 seed, Triad was the only MVL girls team that had to travel. Prairie City built an eight-point lead at halftime en route to the win and will now face Powder Valley for the right to play at Baker City’s final site tournament Feb. 29 – Mar. 3.

The MVL’s No. 1 seed Hosanna Christian will play Elkton on Friday. Hosanna won the MVL postseason tournament and received a state playoff first round bye, while Elkton beat Alsea 56-45 on Tuesday to advance.

Paisley girls basketball beat New Hope Christian 54-48 in overtime, advancing to the second round Friday at Harper.
