GRESHAM, Ore. — Winning two team relays and an individual event, the Henley Hornets girls swimming team won the 2012 OSAA State Championships title Saturday at Mount Hood Community College.
Henley scored 58 team points, topping La Grande’s 44 points. Madras, North Bend and Valley Catholic rounded out the top five. Mazama finished 16th.
The championship was the first for Henley after four second place finishes in the last five years.
Cottage Grove won the boys title over Sweet Home, La Grande, North Bend and Corbett.
January Charter Student Athlete of the Month Angela Kirschner won the Hornets’ only individual title in the 100 freestyle in a time of 55.26 over Madras’ Elizabeth Armitage.
Kirschner finished second in the 50 freestyle. Her 24.95 was second to Cascade Christian’s Breanna Sapienza’s 24.28.
Henley won the 200 medley relay by three seconds over Scappoose and the 200 freestyle relay over Valley Catholic in a time of 1:45.93. The team was also fifth in the 400 freestyle relay.
Leta Spradley was third in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle. Aunika Torres finished sixth in the 200 individual medley, with Jenny Kirschner swimming to a time of 5:34.40 in the 500 freestyle, finishing sixth. Sierra Myers picked up a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke at 1:13.43.
Mazama’s lone point came from Taylor Gill’s sixth place finish in the 100 freestyle.
Gill didn’t make the final in the 50 freestyle, racing to 10th in Friday’s preliminary race. Teammate Mandy Warrior finished 11th in Friday’s 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly prelims.
Klamath Union’s Melissa Britsch didn’t qualify for Saturday’s final in the 500 freestyle, finishing ninth in the prelims.
Summit swept both the boys and girls titles at the 5A level, while Jesuit won the girls and Sunset the boys 6A championships
