PHOENIX, Ore. — A hot start for the Phoenix Pirates set the tone, as the home team handed Klamath Union its first loss in the Skyline Conference with a 58-43 win.

Leading the entire way, No. 4 Phoenix (13-3; 3-1 Skyline) built a 26-6 lead behind 13 first half points on 5-of-8 shooting from senior Alex Young, scoring four three-pointers. Teammate Tyler Dungannon added two more long-range scores, finishing with a team-high 17 points.

Klamath Union (8-8; 3-1) struggled out of the gate, shooting 2-for-11 in the first quarter. Senior Alex Stork was 1-of-6 and fouled three times in the opening quarter, but finished with a game-high 18 points, going 5-of-16 the rest of the game.

The Pelicans fought back in the third quarter, outscoring Phoenix 18-10 behind a 4-for-4 shooting performance by senior Austin Crawford. He had 10 of his 13 points in those eight minutes, as KU went on a 11-0 run.

But the Pelicans only hit 3-of-9 shots in the fourth, while Dungannon went 3-for-4 for seven points.

Klamath Union will travel over the mountains for the second time in a week Friday (8:00 PM – 960 the Sports Legend) visiting the only remaining undefeated team, North Valley, which beat Henley 69-49.

Despite trailing at the end of the first quarter, Klamath Union held Phoenix to just 10 points in the second and third quarters combined, and picked up 11 points in the fourth from junior Jackie Gardner, beating the host Pirates 47-31 in Skyline Conference play.

In a first half of runs, Phoenix jumped to a 9-1 lead before KU scored the next nine points. A three-pointer at the end of the first quarter by Phoenix junior Delanie Tally secured a 12-10 lead.

Klamath Union senior Callie Porter put in seven of her nine points in the second period, helping the Pelicans to a 13-6 difference and a 23-18 halftime lead.

Phoenix (7-8; 1-3) went nearly six minutes without a score in the third, falling behind 34-22. That’s when KU’s Gardner poured it on to seal the victory, despite wearing a brace on her right wrist all game and taking a shot to her knee on a score-and-foul. She was hobbled, leaving the game, but says she’ll be okay with ice.

Phoenix was led by eight points from sophomore Kasey Hamilton.

The Pelicans (11-5; 3-1) have won five of its last six games and go to North Valley Friday (following OIT women’s basketball on 960 the Sports Legend). North Valley was dismantled by conference leader Henley 77-26, falling to 4-12; 0-4 this season.

For Phoenix, it has another home game Friday, hosting Hidden Valley, which lost 50-17 at Mazama.
