KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the third-consecutive poll, Northwood (Fla.) is the No. 1-ranked team in the fifth version of the 2011 – 12 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, announced Monday by the national office. The Seahawks are the only one-loss team in NAIA Division II and recorded all 13 first-place votes to tally 343 points. A 90-66 victory over Johnson & Wales (Fla.) on Jan. 14 was Northwood’s 15th-straight on the season.
Oregon Tech, a 94-93 overtime winner against No. 12 Northwest (Wash.) on Jan. 13 in the NAIA Game of the Week, checks in with the No. 2 ranking and 331 points. Also sliding up one spot is No. 3 Davenport (Mich.) with 317 points. No. 4 Grace (Ind.) is the third team in the top four to push up one position as the Lancers posted 313 points. After a 76-71 loss to unranked Midland (Neb.) on Jan. 14, Dordt (Iowa) falls from second to fifth with 300 points.
No. 21 St. Thomas (Fla.) is one of four newcomers as the Bobcats have won 10-straight after a 1-6 start. This is the first ranking since March 4, 2009 (No. 20) for St. Thomas. No. 22 Spring Arbor (Mich.), No. 24 Ashford (Iowa) and No. 25 Eastern Oregon join St. Thomas on this list. Spring Arbor was last mentioned during the 2009-10 season, Ashford was ranked last year and Eastern Oregon was in the poll on Dec. 12, 2011.
Indiana Wesleyan (No. 14), Saint Francis (Ind.) (No. 18), Grand View (Iowa) (No. 24) and St. Ambrose (Iowa) (No. 25) were the four teams to fall out this week.
No. 15 Indiana Tech makes the biggest improvement within the poll hopping up five spots. The Warriors have won seven of their last eight games to improve to 15-3 overall.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The sixth regular-season Division II Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll will be announced on Jan. 23.
NOTES: (All information dates back to 1999 – 2000) With three teams being ranked for the first time this year, there now have been 45 different teams to be ranked at least once this season… No. 4 Grace (Ind.) has been in the top 10 in all six polls this year – before this season, the Lancers had not reached the top 10 since the 1992-93 season… No. 12 Northwest (Wash.) was the last undefeated team to lose, with that setback coming on Jan. 6 after the Eagles started 14-0… No. 2 Oregon Tech has spent 14-straight polls ranked in the top five – this is the highest ranking since the Hustlin’ Owls since the final poll during the 2009 – 10 season… Embry-Riddle (Fla.) owns the most No. 1 rankings since 2000 with 17; Oregon Tech, Oklahoma Wesleyan and former NAIA member Walsh (Ohio) have posted 12 mentions at No. 1… Oregon Tech is listed with the longest active streak in the Top 25 at 81-straight weeks – the last time the Hustlin’ Owls were not ranked was on Jan. 11, 2005… In second place is No. 1 Northwood (Fla.) with 46-consecutive mentions.
